FISHERMAN WIFE
Dialogue with the Fisherman’s Wife
At the edge of the Scheveningen promenade stands The Fisherman’s Wife of Scheveningen.
Dressed in traditional costume, she gazes out to sea, once waiting for the return of her loved ones. The sculpture commemorates the fishermen of Scheveningen and those who served in the Royal and Merchant Navies and were lost at sea during the Second World War. Engraved on the pedestal is a poem by Inge Lievaart, evoking a sea that both takes and gives, and hope found through Christ triumphant. This woman waits in hope. She carries grief in her heart, her thoughts with those she loves. Through an inner dialogue with Christ, she finds strength to endure. Who hears the cries of our hearts? Are we alone in our trials? The viewer is invited to walk alongside her beneath the peach tree and to contemplate, with her, the mysterious landscape of the sea.
